Animals have been the central part of a number of films that have been made in Hollywood, some of which have had a totally new story line while many have been inspired from a TV series or a cartoon strip. There have been animated films as well which have now created a new market for themselves providing newer stories to the writers to think about. Some of these movies have failed at the box office while some have been highly successful.
Released on June 4, 2010 Marmaduke is a live action movie which has been based on the highly popular newspaper comic strip Marmaduke. Directed by Tom Dey and produced by John Davis, Marmaduke the movie has been distributed by 20th Century Fox. The movie has been written by Vince Di Meglio, Tim Rasmussen and Brad Anderson while Brad Anderson has been drawing the original strip ever since it started coming in the newspapers from 1954 onwards.
Marmaduke the comic strip on which the movie has been based has been very successful but Marmaduke the movie fails to create the same magic and lacks the original strip on a number of parameters. Marmaduke the movie looks more of a dog show and less of a movie with the humor almost missing. The plot looks interesting though when it comes down to the realities of film making the movie fails miserably at the onscreen show.
The acting is also not up to the mark and it seems that the actors have done overacting at many places while the voice actors also did not help the movie. The script could have been shortened and the jokes could have been made more meaningful and funnier. There are some positives in terms of the treatment of animals like humans and showing that they are no different. At some place the dialogues also seem cute.
The lovable Great Dane, Marmaduke and his adventures and misadventures as the family of the owner of Marmaduke, Phil Winslow moves into a new neighborhood in Orange County is what the movie is all about. Marmaduke gets to meet various breed of dogs at his new locality. One of the dogs Mezie has a crush on him and on Jesebel, Marmaduke himself has a crush. Bosco is the violent dog who tries to intimate him but fails while Marmaduke also has Carlos the family cat for his company as he attempts to face the challenges of his new life and partners and affects his owner personally and professionally.
Marmaduke fails to create the same effect as the cartoon strip had and it might not be that successful. When it comes down to the realities of film making and the onscreen show, the movie fails miserably though the plot looks interesting. Marmaduke the movie looks more of a dog show with the element of humor almost missing and less of an entertainment movie.
The movie can be liked by children and the dog lovers but as far as the masses go, the movie would not be liked. It is highly improbable that the movie would even recover its money. If you really have nothing to do and want to take a chance, go and watch Marmaduke.
