Train travel is definitely one of the best ways that there is to see a lot of a country. Taking the whole family for a trip on a train is something that can be really enjoyable provided that you plan it in advance. The tips below should help those who want to make sure that travelling by train is fun for the whole family.

- It is better to try and have as few changeovers as you can because it can be very stressful to have to change trains when you have children with you. When planning your trip try to make sure that you can get a train that goes direct from one location to another or one with very few changes. Ideally you should look for a direct train with no changes.

- Make sure you reserve a window seat in advance so that you and your family can get to enjoy the passing scenery. There can be a high demand for these seats so make sure you book the seat well in advance to avoid disappointment.

- Priority boarding is something that you should consider if you have young children travelling with you. Boarding before everyone else when you have young children can be a great perk; it just makes things so much easier. It is better to be on the train rather than hanging around the station because you often need eyes in the back of your head with children. Once you are seated on the train everyone can relax and just wait for the journey to commence.

- If there is no dining car on the train you will have to take your own food so make sure you check this out before travelling. Nearly all trains have something such as a snack cart but you should find out before you travel.

- Some journeys have a couple of routes with one being more scenic than the other; this is the one you should choose. Your family will enjoy this route more. The internet is a great resource for finding information about the various routes.
